About Dr David McNally and How He Can Help
Dr David McNally is a HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist based in Shrewsbury. He works with adults experiencing a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties, including anxiety, low mood, trauma, stress, and difficulties in relationships or work. He holds a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and has completed further specialist postgraduate therapeutic training through the University of Oxford.
It can feel daunting to reach out for support, and finding the right therapist can seem overwhelming. Dr McNally draws on over a decade of NHS experience to provide a safe, compassionate, and non-judgemental space. His aim is to work collaboratively with you to understand what is troubling you and to find ways forward.
He has extensive postgraduate training across multiple evidence-based psychological therapies. His work is tailored to each individual’s needs and draws on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and several other trauma-informed and holistic psychological approaches. Rather than applying a single therapy model in a fixed way, he integrates these approaches to develop a formulation-led understanding of your difficulties and to offer therapy that is personalised to you as an individual.
Some people come to therapy having had mixed experiences with particular approaches in the past. Part of the work is making sure therapy is adapted carefully to fit you as a person, rather than expecting you to fit a particular model. Together, this can help you make sense of how past experiences may be affecting you now, develop practical ways of coping with the stresses of the here and now, and respond differently moving forward.

Dr David McNally welcomes enquiries from prospective clients and offers a free 15-minute telephone consultation to discuss your needs and whether his approach is the right fit for you. You can contact him directly by email, or via the contact form on this website.
If you decide to proceed, the next step is a separate initial assessment session, where you and Dr McNally can explore your difficulties in more depth and agree on an individualised treatment plan tailored to your needs.
The first appointment with Dr David McNally is a dedicated assessment session, designed to develop a thorough understanding of your difficulties. It also provides an opportunity to identify your therapy goals and to agree on the most helpful individualised therapeutic approach for you.
Complimentary Telephone Consultations
Dr David McNally offers a free 15-minute telephone consultation ahead of booking an initial appointment. This provides an opportunity to briefly discuss the issues bringing you to therapy and to ensure that his approach is the right fit for your needs. To arrange a consultation, please use the contact page.
Session Fees
At present, Dr McNally is only able to accept privately paying clients. This is due to the complex administrative procedures involved in working with insurance providers, as well as his ongoing role within the NHS, which limits the number of private sessions he can offer.
For self-funding clients, individual therapy sessions are charged at £130 per 50 minute session.
Dr David McNally works with clients for an agreed number of sessions, tailored to their individual needs. While many people find that 8 to 12 sessions is a helpful starting point, some may benefit from a shorter or longer course of therapy. Sessions are generally scheduled once a week, and a follow-up appointment can be offered after therapy concludes to support ongoing progress.
If you need to cancel an appointment, please contact Dr David McNally and leave a message. Cancellations made with at least 24 hours’ notice will not be charged; however, the full fee is payable for missed appointments or late cancellations.

Anonymised Testimonials
I came to therapy feeling lost about who I was and what I actually wanted from life. I’d spent years focusing on what I thought I should be doing rather than what mattered to me. Working with Dr McNally helped me understand where those patterns came from and gave me the confidence to start making decisions differently. It’s changed how I relate to my partner, my family and my work. I feel more settled in myself than I have in a long time, and my family have noticed the difference too.
I first contacted Dr McNally because work had become completely unmanageable. I honestly thought that was what we’d end up focusing on, but it turned into something much bigger than that.
I started to realise that some of the things that had made me successful were also making life much harder than it needed to be. Dr McNally somehow helped me keep the good bits while dealing with the parts that were causing problems. There were other things where I needed a completely different approach. I didn’t think I could change some of them, but I have. I feel much more like myself again and I know far more clearly what I want my life to look like.
I’d spent most of my life being incredibly hard on myself and just thought that was who I was. David helped me understand myself in a way I never had before. The work wasn’t always easy, but I always felt taken seriously and supported, especially when it was difficult. It has genuinely been one of the most important things I have ever done. The support I received from David was exceptional and has made a lasting difference to my life.
“I feel like I got a part of myself back that I thought I’d lost.”
